The following entries are from the DLD tour diary. Each band members entry is identified by the following: J: Jack Plug, F: Frank Art, A: AliMac and R: James Sherry!

March,14th,94 The Crypt, Hastings.
Headline:DLD.
J:Goth crowd, dance club, stage surrounded on all sides by people. Good food at the promoter’s friend’s restaraunt. We got a lump of hash as part of the rider. A gnarley woman w/short hair interviewed us after the gig+I don’t know how much sense I was making. But I *really* was trying. F:Apparently we started the set without knowing that the P.A. wasn’t on. We did about 3 songs before Whizz from Sonar Nation had a word. had a great laugh backstage Sonar Nation, ha ha ha ha ha ha! haaagh!!!!!! ha! ha! ha! ha!

March,15th,94 The Cavern, Exeter.
Support:Smirkik.
J: Smallish room. Smirkik didn’t show up until late. Good food rider! Chips, veggie chilli, garlic bread. Small band room. Cool lights show. Some dude was taking our band’s photo while we were trying to watch Smirkik. We impressed the sound guy and a German journo. The audience didn’t seeem to care. Glenn’s guitar dominated the onstage sound. In the van on the way home Glenn broke a 5 minute silence by saying “man,Smirkik sucked!” Got really baked and stayed at the promoter’s house. A woman brought us back there, unamused by Jeremy’s renditions of patriotic songs on his “Hand Horn” They had really cool posters for the gig!

March 16th 94, The Cooperage, Plymouth.
Line up: Wyrmturf, DLD.
J: Largish room, makeshift PA system, OK lights. I was expecting a crap gig. James’s snare was sounding hellish and there was no vocal in the foldback. The support band was a crusty outfit who were fairly unenergetic but entertaining. Especially when the guitarist did a really lame hammer-on solo. When we actually played, the on-stage sound was quite good. People actually came forward and watched. Really good crowd response-we ended up doing “Be My Brain” as an encore, but James’s kick pedal was having some problems. Food rider was jacket potatoes and beans. Band room upstairs, the barman bought me a pint of lager in addition to the case they gave us as a rider. F: Wyrmturf suck big time, so they can fuck off. The promoter ran around neighbouring pubs dragging people in to watch this great (sic) band !

March,17th,94 The Duchess of York, Leeds.
Line up:E.of Ice cream,DLD.
J:We were supporting Emperor of Ice cream. This was the first time I’d ever seen someone mouthing lyrics back at me. Threw me for such a loop that I screwed up the words. Towards the end of the gig there was a group of teenagers jumping around up front. I took a spill at one point and really hurt my arm. As a result i was less hyper for the rest of the gig. 2 gnarley people from a college radio station tried to interview us upstairs-it went pretty well. F:I remember people being pissed off at the fact we had played before they’d arrived to see us, but, hey that’s Rock’n’Roll and not our fault. We should have headlined, as we were meant to have done so!

March,22nd,94 The Joiners Arms, Southampton.
Support: The Zimmer Frames.
A:Zimmer Frames were on heat. Andy, in particular, was the star of the evening(as he shot at the crowd with his guitar!) I’m sure I saw a ching of light reflect from his teeth as he smiled at the crowd. My sister, Lindsay, came along from Portsmouth only to see JP severely influenced by the ‘Gnarl factor’ in the crowd that evening! J:Yeah i couldn’t handle it-plus I was completely sober-pretty un-spazzy. Ali and Frank were doing multiple stage jumps. At one point they both climbed to the top of their respective speaker stacks, and Frank jumped off and landed perfectly on his pedal-nice one. F:Errmm! I think I broke my pedal!!!!

March,24th,94 Rock city, Nottingham.
W/Emperor of Ice Cream.
J:Rock’n’Roll heaven, man. I think the Bee Gee’s played here. Pin-point lights outlining the edge of the steps gave a Frank Sinatra feel to the entryway, and copious neon gave the live room a real Spinal Tap ambience. The stage was really small w/low hanging lights that Ali had to curtail his spazzing habits to avoid. Huge backsage area where Emperor and DLD had separate rooms. The gig went OK and we got really wasted after in the Emperors dressing room. We picked up a hitch hiker on the way...... F:Yeah we got so drunk+wasted w/ Emperors. Some guy pissed Frank off by saying that JP was carrying the band and we’d be nothing without him(probably true!) But Frank retaliated by saying ‘Hey, I write the fucking songs!’ just to see his face shut up, ha! ha!

March,25th,94 JB’s Dudley. no support.
J:This place was weird! From the outside it was just this building that you could easily walk around. It was mostly just one room inside. Quiche and a noodle dish with fries and Lager-good food. Oh plus fruit. what a deal! Unfortunately despite us having a pretty good time, I think the crowd really didn’t get into it. Except for one guy w/dreadlocks who came from Birmingham to see us. Moonbus broke down-push start. Super wobbly drum riser-the kit shaking all over the place. F:Bij was there with Claude, they gave Frank a lift back to London for some reason or other!

March,27th,94 The Robey, London
Support: Huge Baby.
J:The garage gig w/The Didgits was cancelled so Bij booked this show to see how things went. JP was still kind of uninspired but the sound was better than the usual at the Robey. Bij went to the Garage and handed out flyers to get people to show up so the crowd was pretty good. I think 64 people showed up to see the band. Too bad it was a fairly uninspired not that tight or exciting set at the Robey. I couldn’t step backward without knocking James’s drum mic’s over. Mary-Anne Hobbs was there talking to Glenn and Ali when JP shows up and says “Hi, I gotta go squeeze out a massive shit” F:HUGE BAAABYEEEE!!!!

March,3Oth,94 The Boatrace, Cambridge. w/Emperors.
J:Ali’s cousin Jenny showed up and was amazed at Ali’s nuttiness. Jeremy was a bit uninspired. So was the audience. Although there were the typical people post-gig who wanted to know where to buy the single etc... Got interviewed by gnarley youngsters. This large woman introduced the band and befriended Bij-her name is Christine. she and her friend, Claire said they’d come to the gig in Norwich. We gave Emperor of Ice Cream a crazy send off!

March,31st,94 The Oval, Norwich.
Support: Orange Deluxe.
J:The Moonbus broke down on Finchley Rd just south of Golders Green, and holiday traffic was pretty hellish. Hence we didn’t arrive at the gig until about 8.00pm. Short soundcheck was good enough. There was a really small crowd, but about 5 people who had a single or something were into it. Christine and Claire were there(see previous entry) and we gave them a ride home. No riders. Support band were a bit “Rock’n’Roll for me. A:Gig went well, JP attempted his 1st piggyback ride onstage-didn’t quite work! There was a weird goatee guy dancing madly to Orange Deluxe who pulled a moonie at the end of one of their songs-Nutter! Nearly ran out of petrol on the way home due to severe headwinds. On taking Glenn home found a fiesta crushed by a fallen tree!
